Summer is finally heating up in Ann Arbor! This month’s schedule is going to be funky because of venue availability, holidays, and summer travel, so make sure your calendar is up to date!
There are NO official series this month! Swing I, Swing II, and Balboa are on hiatus for July. To make up for that, we’re teaching THREE solo jazz routines! Ever heard of the Shim Sham, Tranky Doo, or the Big Apple? Yeah! Those are solo jazz routines! They’re meant to be danced with a group, and the ones we’re teaching this month are just like that. This month we’ll be teaching the Tranky Doo, Doin’ The Jive, and First Stops!
1st week of July (1-4) – NO classes, beginner lesson, or dance.
July 10, 17, 31 – Beginner lesson & dance @ the Vandenberg Room
July 24 – NO beginner lesson & dance. We’ll organize a social event (maybe a movie night???)
Swing I & Intro Balboa classes are still happening in Mason Hall!
Drop In & Dance are cancelled due to venue issues & anticipated weather!
Join Sarah Campbell Jones & Connor Cole for a 3-hour workshop on Charleston! The first hour will be spent refining basic solo & partnered Charleston. The second & third hours you’ll learn a short-but-challenging Charleston routine!

Tonight’s lessons (Swing I and Solo), and SAA Movie Night: Alive & Kicking are cancelled due to the EXTREME cold. We will be rescheduling our movie night for a later date in the semester.
If you paid for the Swing I and/or Solo series in full, you will be receiving a 1/3 refund (via PayPal if that was how you paid initially; we’ll be contacting the rest of you soon to figure out your preferred method of payment).
Please stay safe and warm!
We’ve got three – that’s right, THREE – series comin’ at you this month to kick off the Winter 2019 semester! You can take as many series at a time as you like, but please make sure that you meet any prerequisites (if there are any, e.g., Swing II)
- Swing I (Wednesdays, 7-8pm): Intro to Lindy Hop, starting from the very basics!
- Solo Jazz Fundamentals (Wednesdays, 8-9pm): No experience needed. Learn basic solo jazz, solo line dances, and some solo Charleston!
- Swing II (Mondays, 7-8pm): Being present in the dance through musicality & dynamics.
and, of course, we host a free, open practice on Mondays from 8-9pm immediately following Swing II. Bring ideas of what you want to work on, and be willing to help others practice theirs!
Want to learn more about the history of Lindy Hop and other jazz/swing dances? Here’s your chance!
Connor & Sarah will be sharing their favorite vintage dance clips of lindy hop, balboa, solo jazz, charleston, chorus girls, shag, blues, tap, and more. Come out and get inspired!
WHERE: Freespace in the Ann Arbor District Library
Most of the dance styles we love were created and spread by some key dancers in the late 1920s and 30s who appeared in a few treasured dance clips available through YouTube and other means. It’s pretty incredible to reflect on what these dances looked like almost 100 years ago! It’s also interesting to look at the videos and clips from the time in between – from the 1930s and 40s to the influence of rock and roll in the 50s and 60s and then to watch some of the original swing dancers dancing in their middle-old age in the 1970s, 80s and 90s with the swing revival. These dances have changed a lot in some ways, but you can also see a spirit that perseveres throughout the decades. Please join us!
Celebrate the holidays with Swing Ann Arbor and Friday Night Swing (FNS) during our Holiday Dance on Saturday, December 15th! Bring your friends and fam for a wonderful evening of live music and dancing!
Never danced before? No problem! We’ll kick off the night with a beginner lesson to get you out on the dance floor!
We’re delighted to have Planet D Nonet playing for us! Planet D Nonet is a “a down & dirty little swing band from Detroit” – and a SIX TIME Detroit Music Award-winning swing band. They’ll keep us swinging out all night long!
